If you have been following my blog, you know I’m all about being frugal and saving money, right? You also know I’m an advocate for women and children, right? Well, one of my favorite places for finding great deals is now also helping to empower women! How cool is that?! Walmart has just launched a program called Empowering Women Together and I am so excited to share it with you!

During my trip to DC, with Shot@Life, I realized how truly dirt-poor people in most developing countries are. They have so very little, things you and I take for granted on a daily basis, they don’t have… like food in the fridge…or a fridge, for that matter! If only these women had a way to earn money-they’d be able to make their lives, and the lives of their children so much better. Many of these women are talented artisans and can create everything from jewelry to clothes. It’s not enough to be able to create something to sell, you also need to have people to sell it to. People that can afford to buy it, you need customers. That’s where Walmart comes in!230784_322517377853262_812898594_nThey’ve created an online destination, called Empowering Women Together. You can go online and buy unique and interesting products from small women-owned businesses around the world. With each purchase you make, you will be helping to empower the women behind the products to support themselves, their families, and their communities. Through Empowering Women Together, these women are going to be able to reach customers they’d never be able to otherwise. I think this is a terrific idea and a win-win for all involved. Take a look at this video to learn more.

So far, Empowering Women Together has over 200 different products, representing nine different countries and and 19 businesses. I can’t wait to take a look at the jewelry from Peru, Rwanda, Kenya & even the U.S. That’s right, the U.S. and Canada are represented too. This is a world-wide program, and women everywhere need to be empowered! There are home accessories from Haiti, iPad & iPhone covers from Nepal, even specialty foods from the U.S. and Canada. If you don’t follow Walmart on FB yet, you can Like them here or follow them on Twitter. I’m a big fan of Pinterest, and I follow Walmart right here. I get all kinds of great decorating ideas from them. Empowering Women Together is an element of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment, through 2016, to help earn $20 billion for women-owned businesses. I applaud Walmart’s efforts and will be doing a lot more online shopping with them… and I don’t have to feel guilty about spending money, because I know I will be helping empower a woman by doing so!

How about you, what do you think of Empowering Women Together? What’s the first thing you’re going to buy?!
