Ok y’all, I came across this earlier in the week and have been marinating on it ever since. Here’s the link to the story. This mom is 44 years old and has a 5 year old daughter that she breastfeeds one or two times a day. (Five Years Old!)
Just so y’all don’t think I’m making this up, here’s a pic: I was quite taken aback by this photo when I first saw it, I’ve always thought of breastfeeding as a means to feed an infant-not a five year old. I honestly do not know of anyone that has breastfed up to the age of five, do you? Everyone I know, (myself included,) breastfed until the baby was old enough to eat solids and drink from a cup, etc… then they were weaned off the breast.
It’s really none of my business how long this woman breastfeeds her child, I just find it odd. The child is not receiving any added nutritional benefits (according to the doctor interviewed for the article), so is it just a bonding thing? Does she want to hold on to her little baby?
I understand becoming a mother later in life and not wanting your little one to grow up- but they do and this little girl is now five years old and in school. How many more years is this mother going to breastfeed her?
What do YOU think? Would you breastfeed a 5 year old? Is there an age where breastfeeding just shouldn’t even be considered? Am I the only one that thinks this is just not right?
Here’s my two cents:
If the child is old enough to make his or her own school lunch- they’re too old to breastfeed.
If the child can tie his or her own shoes, they’re too old to breastfeed.
If the child is in school, they’re too old to breastfeed.
If the child can spell B-R-E-A-S-T, they’re too old to breastfeed.
If the child weighs 50lbs, they’re too old to breastfeed!
But that’s just me, I’m old school – WHAT DO YOU THINK?
