I have been paid to blog and promote The Good Dinosaur as part of a sponsored campaign with DiMe Media and Disney/Pixar. However, all opinions expressed are my own.
Growing up, there were quite a few things I was afraid of. I hid under the blankets anytime there was a thunderstorm, and I was terrified of sharks after seeing the movie Jaws. Most children are scared of something, whether it’s being alone in the dark or “monsters” in the closet.
My Abuela Chavela was a huge influence on me growing up. She grew up dirt poor-didn’t speak, read, or write English – but she was a strong, proud woman. I can remember her asking me how I was doing in school and always encouraging me to do my best. I always felt safe when I was in her presence, and even though I was just a child; I knew she was the rock of our family – La Reina (The Queen).
As my Abuela grew older, I also watched as she battled cancer. She was diagnosed with cancer not once, but twice. The second time it was fatal. My Abuela spent many, many days in the hospital. She fought cancer like a warrior. She was in so much pain, but she was so brave & fearless.
I wish my Abuela could have met my children, I know she would’ve smothered them with besos (kisses)! I try to build up my kids and encourage them to do their best, just like my Abuela (Grandmother) did for me. When we face our fears, we can overcome them, we just have to believe in ourselves!
The Good Dinosaur
I recently watched a movie, with my family, that dealt with helping children overcome their fears. Disney*Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur will be available on Blu-ray™, Digital HD & DisneyMovies Anywhere on February 23rd. The movie is about a dinosaur named Arlo and his little human friend. Just like my Abuela helped me face my fears and find my way, Arlo’s Dad does the same for him. My Abuela taught me many lessons, and I still cherish everything she taught me. Arlo’s Dad equips Arlo with the all the tools he will ever need to face the world on his own; it’s up to Arlo to recognize & utilize those tools. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. It’s a cute movie with an important message, I highly recommend it.
How do you empower your children & help them find their roar?!
