I grew up eating Dunkin’ Donuts. That’s all we had back in the day, in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Each & every time we visited, I would try a new donut-I loved the cream & jelly-filled ones best. A visit to Dunkin’ Donuts was always a special treat for me because we didn’t go there often…my parents strictly controlled how many sweets we ate. It was always me & my Mom, or me & my Mom & brother. Those are precious memories that I now treasure, since losing my Mom last year.
Before flying to Portland, Oregon, I did a quick google search on places to visit while there. I kept seeing one place pop up over & over: Voodoo Doughnuts. I made a point to put it on my itinerary, and I’m glad I did!
We visited the Old Town Portland Voodoo Doughnuts location on a weekday, and it was packed with people. I found out that it’s always packed, no matter what time of the day or night you visit; and that’s saying a lot because they’re open 24/7! We had to stand in line outside for 10 or 15 minutes, but it was all good because the crowd was friendly & excited about being there. I loved the brick wall outside, it’s painted with a gold glitter gloss!
Once we got inside, there was another line to conquer. LOL! The line moved quickly and in no time at all, I was face to face with more donuts than I’d ever seen in my life! Yes, I was a tad bit giddy-all those puffy round mounds of yeast & sugary yumminess.
All those colors… and the ones with bacon! Note the Voodoo Doll donuts too.
I wanted to try them all-but I knew that wouldn’t be possible, so I picked a few and had them boxed up in the iconic pink Voodoo Doughnuts box.
Once back in our hotel, we sat down to try each & every one of our sweet treats. Wanna take a peek inside my box?
Here’s what we had, clockwise from top left:
Mango Tango Doughnut – it’s filled with Mango jelly & topped with vanilla frosting & Tang! (Now THAT’s Old Skool!)
Double Bubble Doughnut – Vanilla frosting, bubble gum dust & a piece of bubble gum!
Neapolitan Doughnut – Chocolate cake doughnut with vanilla frosting, strawberry dust & three marshmallows!
Sprinkles Doughnut – Cake donut with vanilla frosting & sprinkles!
Gay Bar Doughnut – This one is full of cream & all the colors of the rainbow!
My favorite?
The Mango Tango! I loved the filling inside … and there was SO much of it.
All in all, I enjoyed the donuts at Voodoo Doughnuts. Some were a bit dry, I don’t know if that’s the norm or not. The experience was a lot of fun. I’d recommend going to check it out for yourself.
Do you like donuts? Who makes YOUR favorite donut?
(I took more pics, but I can’t get them to post right now-I’ll add them as soon as I figure out what’s up.)
