I’m often asked how I can afford to travel, while raising a family. My answer is quite simple, I save up for it. I realize saving money isn’t a way of life for everyone. Lots of people don’t think they can save, or that they don’t make enough to save. Those same folks are always up in Starbucks buying $8 coffees, or at Target EVERY weekend buying stuff, or at the mall spending like crazy. Hmmm, thought you said you didn’t make enough money to save?!
It’s about priorities really. What’s more important to you – drinking that $8 frap every day, sometimes several times a day, or traveling the world? Buying every new item Target has in stock or a week at Beaches Resorts, in the Caribbean, with your family?
Here are just a few quick tips to help you save money, if you like these, I’ll start to post more on finances & saving.
Top 10 Tips
- Buying items when they are on sale.
- Clearance racks are your friend. Even grocery stores have them. Coupons & rebates help me save money that’s later used to travel.
- Thrift stores! Have one near you? Have you ever been inside? You’d be shocked at the bargains you’ll find. New clothes with tags still on them.
- Plan your vacation ahead of time, buy your airline tix early to help save money. Don’t eat out every day, cook at home!
- Buy Groupon deals for the city you plan to visit-great way to save $$ & do something or visit a place you normally wouldn’t have.
- Stop spending everything you make. Put some money away every month. You can travel if you just save.
- Just because I save, doesn’t make me cheap! Saving allows me to splurge on big ticket items too. Don’t get it twisted.
- People often think being frugal means you can’t have nice things. Just the opposite, I have nice things because I’m frugal!
- Designer brand clothes, the latest in tech, luxury vehicles – ALL the result of living a frugal lifestyle, & spending wisely.
- Invest in yourself first. Open a savings acct, invest in your 401K or IRA or BOTH! Travel is for everyone, not just a select few.
I hope these tips have helped you & I look forward to hearing all about the places you’ll be traveling to now that you’ll be saving money!
