Five people are missing, and quite possibly deceased, so why all the jokes? There’s nothing funny about the Titanic Submarine tragedy. As I scan my Facebook and Twitter feeds, a reoccurring theme has become evident. Folks are cracking jokes about the missing people on the OceanGate Titan. They’re shaming the victims. Why?!
Yes, we all know they each paid $250,000 for (what was supposed to be) an adventure of a lifetime. Is that it? Is it jealousy? Are folks so upset that they could never afford to do this, that they’ve resorted to shaming the victims? I think some of the jokesters really are jealous. I’ve also seen a lot of “they could’ve done so much with that money…” You know what? It was their money and they could do whatever they wanted with it. We all like and enjoy different things. Evidently, these folks were Titanic enthusiasts. There’s nothing wrong with that. Theres also nothing wrong with spending your money any way you choose!
I don’t understand making fun of people who are lost at sea. The fact that they were wealthy, does not make it ok to joke about their misfortune. They were someone’s son, brother, husband, father, friend. Have a heart, surely you were raised better than that?! Right?
I don’t understand cracking jokes about people in crisis, especially when that crisis is taking place in real time. Thats a whole other level of cruel. It’s borderline sadistic. Cracking jokes about someone, knowing they could be dying as you tell the joke… there’s nothing funny about that. It is quite revealing though, and tells me a whole lot about the type of person you are.
When did death and dying become funny? When did a tragedy playing out right in front of our eyes become material for jokes?
My heart goes out to the friends and family of everyone involved in this sad event. May you find comfort in knowing so many of us are thinking about you, and sending you virtual hugs.
Many lives have been forever changed because of this tragedy, and there’s nothing funny about that.
