Meet Lynda
Hi- I’m Lynda, Biracial (Mixed) Latina blogger, married nearly 31 years, mother of two sons. Some of you may know me as @MommyPowers. I recently merged my Mommy Powers blog with my food/travel blog (This Mama Can Cook), and now you can find everything here in one place – Mommy Power’s Mixed Blessings.
You can contact me at TheMommyPowers@gmail.com.
Originally from Texas; I’m living the California life now and I’m loving it! California is beautiful and has quickly become our home. There’s so much to enjoy here, from Legoland in SoCal, to Safari West up here in Northern CA. We enjoy getting out and exploring all CA (and beyond), has to offer. There’s a great big world out there, and we want to see it all!
I’m frugal, but not cheap. In other words, I don’t mind using coupons and shopping the clearance racks – all the money I save comes in handy when I want to buy a new pair of Tieks or visit my favorite Beaches Resort, in Turks & Caicos!
I enjoy writing & photography. I’ve contributed to several online websites including Patch.com, QueRicaVida.com, MommyNoire.com, and Mamiverse.com. I’ve also worked as a freelance photographer for our local paper.
Why Mixed Blessings?
As I mentioned above, I’m Biracial. I’m 1/2 White & 1/2 Mexican American, otherwise known as “Mixed”. Growing up biracial has prepared me for the life I now lead, as the mother of multiracial (Mixed) sons. My husband is African-American. Who better to talk about interracial relationships & raising biracial kids than someone who’s actually experienced it? I know what it feels like to not always fit in- and that’s ok. It’s ok to be “different”- I’m proud of my biracial heritage. I’m raising my sons to embrace everything that makes them different & unique.
Being a voice for those that may not have one, that’s just one of my passions. Last year, the United Nations invited me to become a Shot@Life Champion, representing CA. Did you know a child dies every 20 seconds from a vaccine-preventable disease? Shot@Life provides life-saving vaccines to children in developing countries. I never imagined starting a blog & speaking up for others would get me invited to Capitol Hill, but that’s exactly what happened.
I’m no millennial. I’ve been through many life experiences, from two miscarriages (one at 16 wks gestation), to health issues, to having a child with special needs. Having been in abusive relationships in the past; I will always speak out about domestic violence.
Raising our brown-skinned, “mixed” sons can be overwhelming at times; considering everything that has taken place recently. I’m a member of a group called #VoicesForOurSons. We are Moms of Boys of Color. Together, we hope to change the way America views our sons.
My Family – My Greatest Blessings
Hubby: We’ve been through so much in our 31 years together… the good, the bad, and the ugly. He served in the military for 10 years. There’s no one else I’d rather have by my side in this crazy journey called Life! He’s a tech nerd, car enthusiast, and sports fanatic! We share a love of sports & cheer for our Golden State Warriors & SF 49’ers every chance we get.
The Oldest: My first-born, not only handsome, but intelligent too. He’s always marched to the beat of a different drummer & I’m ok with that. He’s becoming a man right before my eyes, learning to stand on his own two feet.
Little Brother: Our little man, my cutie-pie. Like his father & big bro, he’s a natural born athlete. He likes looking good and has his own sense of style. He loves to travel, and like his Mommy, feels most at home on the beach.
