An Open Letter To Steve Harvey… From A Blogger

May 13, 2014

I’ve followed the career of Steve Harvey for years now, from The Steve Harvey Show (with Romeo & Bullethead) to his comedy specials on cable TV, Family Feud, his new daytime talk show & on the radio. I have always had a very high opinion of him. The work he is doing mentoring young men is amazing.

Last week, he said something on his radio show that didn’t sit well with me. It was regarding some bloggers that didn’t agree with his opinions on the whole Mimi Faust sex tape ordeal.

He said something to the effect that “bloggers don’t make decisions” and aren’t “movers & shakers.” He was basically saying bloggers aren’t doing anything of value-aren’t making a difference in the world. WHAT?!

I could not believe what I was hearing. Did he really lump ALL bloggers together, based on what a few had said regarding his Mimi Faust opinion? I immediately knew I needed to speak up and show Mr. Harvey that all bloggers are NOT alike. There are many bloggers that are doing Big Things and speaking up for those that don’t have a voice.

Mr. Harvey, allow me to introduce you to a couple of bloggers that might just change your mind.

This is Katherine Stone, she is the founder of Postpartum ProgressKatherine-2-e1319558677576 Her blog/website is an online resource for Moms suffering from Postpartum Depression. Did you know 1 in 7 pregnant & new moms will have a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder?  She made a decision to help women that were suffering in silence. Please take a look at her blog and then tell me she’s not a mover & shaker!

This is Leah Segedie, after losing over 100 pounds, she decided to help others do the same. She started her Mamavation and Bookieboo blogs and has helped other women lose a total of over 3,000 pounds!100628leah She is also doing big things in the world of GMO’s, battling in the trenches to get our government to start labeling GMO’s in the foods we eat. I’d definitely say she’s making all the right decisions & really shaking things up, wouldn’t you?!

Here’s Lamar & Ronnie Tyler, their blog is named Black And Married With Kids. event-page-header-sml-01They were fed up with all the negative images of Black marriage in the media. They created BMWK, and it is now the largest independent African American marriage & parenting site on the web. Check out their website, you’ll see that they are movers, shakers & decision makers!

As for me, my name is Lynda. I’m nowhere near as big a blogger as the others I’ve mentioned, but I am an advocate for women & children nonetheless. photo-86 Last year, the United Nations Foundation invited me to join their Shot@Life Organization. Did you know that every 20 seconds a child dies from a vaccine preventable disease? Shot@Life provides life saving vaccines to children in developing countries. Last February, I made the decision to accept their invitation. I traveled to Washington, DC to lobby Congress for support. There was a lot of moving & shaking going on up on Capitol Hill! Shot@Life is helping to save the lives of thousands of children every day. Every Child Matters, no matter where they were born or where they live.

Mr. Harvey, I hope I have shown you that not all bloggers are the same. There are many, many more of us out here, trying to make a difference. We care about our neighborhoods, our cities, and our fellow human beings. Together, we are doing big things!
