Michelle Dobyne Epitomizes the Way Blacks Are Portrayed in the Media

January 11, 2016

This video of Michelle Dobyne’s interview after an apartment fire at the Casa Linda Apartments in Tulsa, OK has gone viral.

After watching the video and cringing, my first thought was, “Not again!”  Where do they find these people to interview? Was Michelle Dobyne the only person available? Surely there must have been at least one other person NewsOn6 could have interviewed… right?! Someone that wasn’t so “meme” worthy?

It seems that anytime there is an accident, house fire, natural disaster, etc & an African American is interviewed-the interview always ends up looking eerily similar to this one. Why is that? Why are African Americans made the butt of jokes in these news interviews? It’s gotta be for ratings, right? Antoine Dodson, Courtney Barnes, Sweet Brown… the list goes on & on.

My husband of 25 years is Black, my kids are half Black, my in-laws are Black. I have never encountered anyone like Michelle Dobynes before, NOT TODAY or any other day! She does not represent the Black people I know. And I shouldn’t have to say this, but I know people will see this interview & assume she does.

Ms. Dobynes might get her 15  minutes of fame as a result of this interview going viral. I just hope she realizes people aren’t laughing with her, they’re laughing at her. Big difference. They’re also laughing at African Americans everywhere.

This blog post isn’t going to change the world, I am well aware of that. I wrote it anyways. I wrote it because people, of all races & ethnicities, are tired of seeing Blacks portrayed like this on the news and elsewhere. We see it – we know what the media is doing.

Stay woke!
