Keeping My Latino Heritage Alive

When my Mom passed away last year, a piece of my Latino heritage went with her. My Mom took memories & stories of her childhood to her grave; stories she never shared with me. I’ve since learned things I never knew about her parents, my Grandparents. I wish my Mom would’ve shared more of her childhood with me, but I understand why she didn’t – she suffered many losses growing up.

I remember being a child & going to visit my Abuela & my Tia. Their tv’s were always on the Spanish channels and I was so intrigued by that. Growing up biracial meant our tv was usually on the English channels in our home, although my Mom did sometimes watch her novelas. But at my Grandma Segovia’s house & my Tia Estella’s house-it was all Spanish all the time!

My Tia loved watching Lucha Libre (wrestling), and I got a kick out of watching her talk to (and sometimes yell at) the tv, telling the wrestlers what to do. Watching Lucha Libre with my Tia helped me learn Spanish. I picked up on words & phrases & it made me want to learn more.

My Tia, Abuela & Mom are gone. It’s up to me to teach my children about their Latino heritage. Just like TV helped me learn Spanish & bond with my Tia, today I’m using my TV & XFINITY X1 to help teach my kids Spanish & to introduce them to some of the shows I watched when I was a child.
