Whether we like it or not, flu season is here! That means there’s going to be many of us walking around either fighting the flu off, or avoiding people with the flu entirely. Forget the zombie apocalypse, walking around with the flu is like being a zombie: you’re surrounded by people who have it and you don’t want to be infected. If you wind up one of the unlucky ones, you’re going to need some supplies stored up. Trust me, you’ll be entirely too sick to wander around and collect them later. Here’s a checklist; I’ve included links to products you need to make shopping easier for you.
Tissues
Your nose is going to run like it’s being chased by angry dogs. Before you know it, you will have used up all your tissues and be forced to go grab the toilet paper. Toilet paper is like sandpaper to your nose, and with repeated use you will have a running, scabby, sore nose in addition to the flu. The only way to avoid this is to have a few boxes of tissues on hand, and a waste paper basket to collect the mountain of used tissue balls you’ll be accumulating.
Cough Drops
Cough drops won’t always stop your coughing, but they will soothe a sore throat. I doubt you’ll be in the mood to sing or yell, but if you are, it is always nice to be able to do those things without feeling like your throat is being used as a pincushion. Make sure you stock up on lozenges with extra vitamin C to boost your immune system while you’re at it.
Fever Reducer
No, you’re not in a sauna, you’re sweating because you have a terrible fever. The sweat is your body trying to rid itself of all the flu garbage coursing through your veins. That means you have got to have a great fever reducer on hand if you’re planning to spend your time doing anything but wiping up puddles of sweat while you perfect your shot trying to make the tissue paper balls into the waste paper basket.
Lemons
Vitamin C is SO necessary for our immune system, and yours is in need of major support right now. Not only is the vitamin C in lemons going to help you get on the path out of flu land, lemons kill germs. You, my friend, are mighty germy right now. You’re going to need all the germ killers you can get.
Honey
Honey is one of the gold standard substances of the cold and flu world. It tastes great, you can put it in tea, and it soothes your throat. There is nothing better for that itchy, raw feeling in the back of your throat than some honey. Make sure you grab yourself an extra container to make it through flu season. (When I was a child; my Grandma would mix a spoonful of honey and a few squirts of lemon juice together & give it to me to tame my cough.)
Tea
It is steamy, warm, and you can put honey and lemon in it. If there is a better remedy to help you through the flu, I’ll eat my hat (if you find one, please don’t hold me to that). A good warm brew is going to help you soothe your throat, open up your nasal passages, and get some much-needed ingredients into your system.
Great Streaming Service
If you have to be cooped up in the house for days at a time, you’re going to need something to do. Discarded tissue basketball is only going to entertain you for so long. You don’t want to do anything crafty because: germs. Germs all over your crafts is not a good look. In conjunction with the rest of your flu arsenal, you’re going to need a good binge-watching session.
You CAN survive flu season. Make sure that you stock up on everything you need so you won’t be running low if the illness strikes. Remember that the flu spreads quickly, so be careful to wash your hands thoroughly, keep them away from your eyes, nose, and mouth, and avoid people who have the flu!
