I Don’t Know Where I’ll Be When I Pass Away, Should I Still Preplan My Funeral?

January 21, 2021

This is a sponsored conversation, in collaboration with Skylawn Memorial Park. All opinions are mine.

It’s a new year, and many of us are on a mission to improve our lives. Some of us are putting in extra hours in our makeshift home gyms. We’re cleaning out our closets and tidying up our living spaces. We’re working hard to become better versions of ourselves. Part of that work may include writing out wills, and pre-planning our funeral arrangements.

That’s right, I’m back with more valuable information regarding funeral preplanning!

People don’t talk about these things. So many of us have very little knowledge when it comes to funerals, cremations, and preplanning.

I’m on a mission to help educate folks on these topics. Knowledge is power, and it helps us make sound decisions.

I asked the knowledgeable staff at Skylawn Memorial Park a question that family members have asked me.

“What if I pay for my funeral arrangements in advance, but I move and pass away in another state? What happens then? Do I lose the money I already paid? Maybe I should just let my family handle it after I die.”

Skylawn Memorial Park, here in Northern California, believes families need to have conversations about their final wishes. These conversations should take place while family members are in a good frame of mind. Critical decisions are handled better in a non-emotional state, rather than trying to make them during one of the most difficult times of your life.

Life Moves Quickly, Plan Ahead To Protect The Ones You Love

Skylawn Memorial Park is affiliated with many other cemeteries and funeral homes across the United States. If you purchase a funeral plan through them, you’ll have the opportunity to transfer the contract to one of their sister properties. You will receive the full credit amount in whatever state their sister property is located. Let me break it down for you. Say you spend $10,000 on a prearrangement in California, and move to Texas. You’ll have the option to transfer the $10,000 credit from California to Texas, to use towards funeral arrangements there.

In addition to being able to transfer your contract; I learned something else.

The staff at Skylawn Memorial Park, told me the state of California, has strict rules that all cemeteries and funeral homes must follow.  All monies for funerals and cremations are held in a guaranteed trust with the state of California. In the event that the beneficiary or purchaser of the trust wishes to cancel because of a move, Skylawn will issue a full refund within 30 days of a written request.

I hope this info has helped you. I believe the benefits of planning in advance, outweigh the risk that you may not need funeral services here in the state of California. To be honest, if you get your money back, what risk is there, really?
